Is it worth working for a company that doesn’t get marketing ?
The long and the short of it… or just the short of it.
The short and the long answer is ‘no’.
Unless the founder/leadership trust you inherently and are open to being educated. And are smart and end up getting it.
Which is not very often. At all.
I hear you. It’s tough to find a company that gets marketing.
Marketing is this elusive concept for most. Most people either don’t understand it at all, or lump it into something like PR, or communications, or sales enablement, or put more simply, helping sales close deals by providing them with sales decks and sorting their badges out at events.
Or worse still, they think marketing is just about promotions.
‘Get 20% off this deal !’
And the sad thing about leadership not getting marketing is that they then have totally unrealistic expectations from their marketing team.
They expect a one or two person marketing team to do all the things :
- Website copy and optimisation
- SEO
- Events
- Partnerships
- Content marketing
- Paid and organic social
- Positioning and messaging
- Crafting of offers and pricing
- Customer journey optimisation
