Is your product turning into Frankenstein ?

Why and what to do about it

I’m amazed at how many businesses neglect to define their ICP (Ideal Customer Profile), let alone build a product that serves that ICP.

Businesses are in such a frenzy to acquire customers and bring in revenue that whoever walks through the door is a win for the company. Until it isn’t.

Customer churn is the most obvious repercussion of not focusing on an ICP, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

What’s actually happening is you’re creating a negative loop where your non-ideal customers are setting your company strategy. You’re building features to satisfy customers that will always be ambilavent at best and unhappy at worst, and will switch the moment another solution comes their way that IS custom made for them and their needs.

Your employees are not getting the gratification they want and need because they’re constantly serving customers that are not a good fit, which are likely going to be customers who complain, are unhappy or just plain difficult to satisfy no matter what.

Your product will begin to look like Frankenstein; a hotchpotch of disparate features whose implementation is dictated by customers whose opinion shouldn’t have been listened to in the first place.
