Let’s say you’re the first marketing hire in a B2B SaaS business whose growth is product-led or sales-led (or a little bit of both) and you’ve been brought in to build out the marketing function.

The first few months should be spent understanding the fundamentals of the business.

I’d focus on the 2 things below :
1. Talk to people : this will give you a subjective view on the business
2. Look at the data : this will give you an objective view on the business

1. Talk to people :

And listen carefully. Listening to multiple people within the business will give you a 360° view on what makes the company tick and what doesn’t.

Most importantly, this will give you a sense of whether the company vision and objectives are being clearly communicated or not. Most times, every person has their own sense of the objectives and priorities, and are in their little corner working on their little thing with no overall coherence.

This is where you need to seek clarity as much as possible. Ask questions of your boss/the founder/the exec team.
