What the hell does marketing even DO ?
More people ask this question than you might think
I’ve just started a new role as head of marketing and demand generation in a B2B SaaS company.
I’m taking liberties here to say that I’m Head of Marketing. It’s easy to be Head of Marketing in a marketing team of exactly ONE :D
It’s been interesting overall, and particularly with regards to one thing :
People have no idea what marketing really is.
I’ve been asked the most ‘interesting’ of questions, and I’ve been in the most ‘interesting’ of conversations. As in :
Colleague : ‘Do you do nice powerpoint slides?’
Me : ‘No, I hate powerpoint’.
Colleague : ‘WHAT ? You’re in marketing and you hate Powerpoint?’
When was the last time being good with Powerpoint was a valid proxy for filling a marketing role ? Like in the 90s? Early 2000s perhaps ?
And then I get copied in random emails where it’s quite clear the person copying me doesn’t fully understand what the hell I do. I seem to have turned into this catch-all bucket where people are including me in all kinds of conversations because they all have their own version of what marketing is, or should be.
